PROF. RAUL C. SABADO, J.D.
A Lawyer by Day, A Professor by Night
I
received
my
Juris
Doctorate
degree
from
Loyola
Law
School
of
Los
Angeles
and
my
undergraduate
degree
in
Economics
from
California
State
Polytechnic
University,
Pomona,
where
I
am
currently
an
Adjunct
Professor
in
the
Political
Science
Department.
I
am
also
an
Adjunct
Professor
at
University
of
La
Verne,
College
of
Law.
Prior
to
joining
the
Los
Angeles
County
Public
Defender’s
Office
in
2005,
I
served
the
people
of
Monterey
County
at
the
Public
Defenders
Office
during
law
school.
Upon
graduation,
I
worked
as
a
civil
litigator
for
the
Law
Offices
of
Guerrero
&
Chan,
where
I
gained
valuable
experience
in
civil
matters.
At
the
Public
Defender’s
Office,
I
have
personally
handled
thousands
of
criminal
cases.
and
I
gained
substantial
jury
trial
experience.
In
addition,
I
serve
as
the
President
of
the
San
Gabriel
Valley
Lawyer
Referral Service.
In
addition
to
representing
adults,
I
represented
hundreds
of
children
in
juvenile
delinquency
court
and
I
gained
an
understanding
of
the
unique
sanctions
of
the
juvenile
justice
system
and
its
bench
trials
that
very
few
criminal
defense
attorneys
have.
In
addition,
I
received
many
hours
of
training
to
meet
the
court’s
rigorous
standards
so
that
I
could
serve
on
the
panel
of
appointed
juvenile
defense
counsels
at
the
Pomona
Courthouse,
where
I
am
currently
a
court-appointed
counsel.
At
Cal
Poly
Pomona,
I
am
also
the
Lead
Coach
to
the
award-winning
and
nationally-ranked
Cal
Poly
Pomona
Mock
Trial
Team.
I
teach
university
students
the
skills
of
trial
lawyers,
law,
evidence
and
general
courtroom
demeanor.
Each
year,
my
students
compete
in
national
tournaments
against
students
from
other
universities
in
trials
judged
by
real
judges
and
lawyers.
Under
my
leadership,
the
students
continue
to
expand
the
university’s
trophy
cabinet.
Not
a
year
goes
by
without
my
team
earning
awards
for
the
university.
I
donate
my
time
to
advise
Cal
Poly
Pomona
students
as
a
pre-law
advisor
and
I
have
created
the
popular
“Ask
a
Lawyer
Series”
lectures
that
serve
to
provide
legal
information
to
students
and
the
community.
Topics
have
ranged
from
the
law
school
application
process
to
individual
rights
during a police investigation.
In
my
free
time,
I
enjoy
camping,
biking,
hiking,
and
discovering
this
beautiful
country
with
my
wife
and
two
young
children
in
an
RV.
I
find
tremendous
fulfillment
in
mentoring
future
lawyers
and
those
unsure
of
whether
the
practice
of
law
is
a
good
career
choice
for
them.
My
office
provides
unique
opportunities
for
a
select
few
undergraduate
interns
each
semester
in
gaining
unparalleled
experience
in
criminal
defense
and
working
in a law office.
HOW AM I DIFFERENT?
You
will
generally
find
three
types
of
attorneys
who
practice
criminal
defense:
First
are
those
who
advertise
criminal
defense
as
part
of
their
legal
services
but
it
really
makes
up
a
small
part
of
it.
They
are
often
family
law
or
business
law
attorneys
who
take
on
criminal
defense
to
support
their
practice.
Second,
there
are
the
media
hounds
who
advertise
DUI
representation
on
radio
and
television
but
who
will
never
know
you
personally
or
even
see
your
file.
You
get
an
attorney
assigned
to
your
case.
Third,
there
are
the
sole
practitioners
who
lack
the
resources
to
leave
no
stone
unturned
and
often
plead
you
out
at
the
first
court
date
without
a
thorough
analysis
of
the
facts.
So
how
am
I
different?
•
I
HAVE
SPENT
MY
ENTIRE
CAREER
DEFENDING
REAL
PEOPLE
WITH
FEELINGS
OF
ANXIETY,
FAMILIES
TO
SUPPORT
AND
THEIR
FREEDOMS
AT STAKE.
•
I
NOT
ONLY
HAVE
EXPERIENCE
AND
EXPERTISE
BUT
I
TEACH
IT
TO
OTHERS.
MANY
OF
MY
FORMER
STUDENTS
ARE
NOW
DISTRICT
ATTORNEYS AND PUBLIC DEFENDERS.
•
I
MEET
WITH
EACH
CLIENT.
I
AM
INVOLVED
IN
DEVELOPING
STRATEGY,
REVIEWING
THE
FACTS
AND
NEGOTIATING
WITH
DISTRICT
ATTORNEYS FOR EACH CLIENT’S CASE.
•
I
PERSONALLY
SELECT
MY
ASSOCIATE
ATTORNEYS
AND
PAINSTAKINGLY
TRAIN
EACH
ONE MYSELF.
JUST
MEETING
ME
ONCE
WILL
HELP
YOU
UNDERSTAND
HOW
THAT
HAS
MADE
ME
THE
UNIQUE
AND
HIGHLY
DESIRED
LAWYER
MY
CLIENTS WRITE ABOUT.
